    The residue that survives every wash has a name. eDNA

    eDNA is a sticky film bacteria leave behind in fabric fibres. It traps and holds organic matter that starts to stink and can make fabric feel coarse and look dull. Detergent wasn't built to break eDNA down. DNase was.

    Breaks down what bacteria leave behind.

    Bacteria leave behind eDNA as they break down organic matter, bonding to fabric fibres and trapping more with every wear. That trapped matter goes rancid and it's what starts to smell. eDNA doesn't respond to detergent, which is why it keeps coming back. DNase breaks that bond so it can be washed away, and the smell with it.

    There are other enzyme boosters with DNase, but this is the only one that's just DNase — which means I can use it on silk, wool and other natural fabrics. After a season of hunting, our wool undergarments needed some help and Gear Guard did an amazing job.

    I love this stuff! I use it in my wash loads, I use it to pre-soak, I use it to wash period pants, and I've used it to wash stinky pet stuff. There's no end to the uses. If it's got some sort of body-related stink on it, I'll be using Gear Guard to get it out.

    How to use Gear Guard in a top or front loader?

    If your machine does not have a detergent tray, add your capful of Gear Guard to the washing tub along with your detergent. If you have our reusable pump dispenser for 375ml bottles, 3 pumps of Gear Guard.

    If your machine has a detergent tray, it depends on whether you use powder or liquid detergent.
    If you use liquid detergent, add both the Gear Guard and your detergent into the usual detergent tray. A capful of Gear Guard, or three pumps if you have our reusable pump dispenser for 375ml bottles.
    If you use powder detergent, we recommend adding powder beneath your clothes, and adding Gear Guard into the detergent tray. This is to minimise the chance of the powder and Gear Guard turning gluggy. There is no risk to your clothes if you add powder and Gear Guard to the detergent tray.

    What fabrics is Gear Guard safe to use on?

    Dnase is one the enzymes that is safe to use on natural fibres as it does not attack the proteins in the fibres. This means fabrics like silk, wool and cashmere are safe to use with Gear Guard.

    What temperature should I wash at using Gear Guard?

    Gear Guard's sweet spot is around 40°C (about 104°F). It will work up to 60°C (140°F), though not recommended above that. Around 88°F (31°C) is just the start of its effective range warmer is better for enzyme activity.

    Is Gear Guard cruelty-free and vegan-friendly?

    Our active enzyme is produced through microbial fermentation, and the rest of the ingredients are non-animal-derived. The product has not been tested on animals.

    What's the difference between Gear Guard Original and Gear Guard Advanced?

    Gear Guard Original is DNase only, where as Gear Guard Advanced has DNase + Lipase. You only need to use one in any particular wash cycle, though which one depends on your detergents. If your detergent has Lipase already but not DNase, Gear Guard Original will boost your detergent.
    If your detergent has neither DNase nor Lipase, Gear Guard Advanced will supplement your detergent.
    There is no risk using both at the same time, or adding Gear Guard Advanced to a detergent that already has Lipase.
