    Why it works

    The residue that survives every wash has a name. eDNA

    eDNA is a sticky film bacteria leave behind in fabric fibres. It traps and holds organic matter that starts to stink and can make fabric feel coarse and look dull. Detergent wasn't built to break eDNA down. DNase was.

    DNase I

    Breaks down what bacteria leave behind.

    As skin cells break down, they release eDNA, a sticky residue that clings to fibres and traps oils and dirt. Left there, those oils go off and dull the fabric. eDNA doesn't respond to detergent, which is why smells keeps coming back. dnase breaks that residue down so it can be washed away, and the smell with it.

    What ingredients are in Gear Guard Original?

    How do I use Gear Guard products in a top or front loader?

    One capful per wash, or three pumps if you're using our pump dispenser on a 375ml bottle.

    Where it goes depends on your machine and detergent.

    No detergent tray
    Pour Gear Guard into the drum with your detergent, on top of your clothes.

    Detergent tray + liquid detergent
    Add Gear Guard to the tray with your detergent.

    Detergent tray + powder detergent
    Put your powder in the drum under your clothes, and Gear Guard in the tray. Powder and liquid mixed together in the tray can turn gluggy. It won't hurt your clothes, it's just messier.

    Is Gear Guard safe on delicates and period underwear?

    Yes! DNase is one of the enzymes that is safe to use on natural fibres as it does not attack the proteins in the fibres themselves. This means fabrics like silk, wool and other natural fibres are safe to use Gear Guard on.

    What temperature should I wash at using Gear Guard?

    Gear Guard's sweet spot is around 40°C (about 104°F). It will work up to 60°C (140°F), though not recommended above that. Around 88°F (31°C) is just the start of its effective range warmer is better for enzyme activity.

    Can I hand wash with Gear Guard?

    Yes. It's a good option for the pieces you'd rather keep out of the machine, like lingerie, activewear, wool and silk.

    Use half a capful, or one pump with the pump dispenser on a 375ml bottle, along with your usual detergent. Mix both into warm water, around 40°C or as warm as the care label allows, before adding your clothes. Then hand wash gently and rinse well.

    If you have sensitive skin or a known isothiazolinone sensitivity, wear gloves while you hand wash.

    There are other enzyme boosters with DNase, but this is the only one that's just DNase — which means I can use it on silk, wool and other natural fabrics. After a season of hunting, our wool undergarments needed some help and Gear Guard did an amazing job.
