Gear Guard Enzyme Laundry Detergent Booster

Ingredients

The Deoxyribonuclease enzyme
The powerhouse of Gear Guard! DNase I (for short) is a naturally occurring enzyme, that breaks down sweat residue, organic gunk, and the extracellular eDNA that binds odour residues to fibres like glue.

Water
Water helps distribute the enzyme's evenly across your gear, ensuring every fibre gets cleaned thoroughly.

Preservatives (MCI & MI)
To ensure Gear Guard stays fresh and effective, even in warm and humid environments, we use small amounts of preservatives - Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and Methylisothiazolinone (MI). While these are commonly used in many household products, we know that some people with sensitive skin may experience Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD). If you’ve had sensitivities before, we recommend trying a single bottle first. We’re happy to offer a full refund if it’s not right for you.

Head to our FAQs if you would like a little more detail or have more questions.

Here at Garame Cleaning Co HQ (a.k.a. our home laundry), we’re still using bottles from our original batch, from Mid 2024. And the good news is they’re still working perfectly.

As long as your bottle stays sealed between uses and isn’t stored somewhere hot for long periods (like in a car or on a sunny window sill), Gear Guard should stay just as effective well beyond the 12-month mark after purchase, if not longer.

Does Gear Guard expire or lose effectiveness over time?

Not in any noticeable way!

Because Gear Guard’s active enzyme (DNase I) is stable in liquid form, it doesn’t “expire” like food or detergent might. Over time (We’re talking years here) there might be a very slight reduction in enzyme activity, but nothing you’d ever notice in a regular wash cycle.

If it’s been sitting for a while, just give the bottle a quick shake before use to make sure everything’s evenly mixed, and you’re good to go.

Is Gear Guard affected by heat or cold/freezing?

The DNase enzyme can handle the cold! In a lab setting, DNase can see -20c (-4f) and still be effective.

As long as the liquid defrosts at room temperature, give the bottle a shake and it should be good to go.

For heat, normal household temperatures will be fine. Prolonged and repeated exposure to high temperatures, like in a car or hot warehouse, will have an affect on the DNase enzyme.

Can I store Gear Guard in the fridge?

While it's not essential for everyday use, keeping the bottle in the fridge can helps the enzyme stay active for longer in the same way lab DNase solutions are stored chilled. This is especially relevant if you purchased a number of bottles at once and are storing them.

If the alternative is leaving Gear Guard in an environment that exposes it to prolonged and repeated high heat (35c/95f) then we would advise to store your bottles in the fridge.

In a normal washing machine, be it a top or front loader, a capful (about 5ml) is sufficient for the majority of loads.

What about large capacity machines?

For DNase, it's all about time on fabric. So a single capful will be fine for ongoing maintenance type loads with a suitably long initial cycle time.

If you have items that haven't seen DNase before along with a large capacity machine, go with two capfuls for the initial wash, then just the one capful for ongoing washes.

Yes, Gear Guard can be used for handwashing!

Dissolve a small amount of your usual detergent in a basin of cool to warm water, then add about half a capful of Gear Guard. With DNase, it's all about time on fabric, so soak your items for at least 30 minutes, if not longer. Gently agitate now and then, then rinse well.

The detergent and water help the Gear Guard enzyme penetrate fabrics and reach the eDNA residues, and the soak gives it time to break down the DNA‑based “odour glue”, so smells and other human funk can rinse away, even on delicate fibres.

Water hardness refers to the presence of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, in water.

Our key ingredient, DNase I, is activated in the laundry cycle when it comes into contact with water and the fabric. It remains active in both hard and soft water, and isn't negatively effected by higher concentrations of calcium or magnesium.

This means that the capful dosage will work just as well in hard or soft water.
